According to the age-old practice of astrology, we are all influenced by the effect of Mercury in retrograde.
WHAT IS “MERCURY RETROGRADE?”
Due to the way our planet’s orbit interacts with the orbits of the other planets, they might sometimes appear to be traveling backward through the night sky with respect to the zodiac. This is, in fact, an illusion, which we call apparent retrograde motion.
Three to four times a year, it appears as if Mercury is traveling backward. We refer to these periods as times when Mercury is in retrograde motion, or simply “Mercury retrograde.” These times in particular are traditionally associated with confusion, delay, and frustration. Think email blunders and frazzled travel plans. Think your car breaking down for no reason, important mail getting lost between the sender and receiver, and the terms of a contract going awry during these periods. Computers go a bit wonky, and you can’t find your house keys.
However, this is an excellent time to reflect on the past. It’s said that intuition is high during these periods, and coincidences can be extraordinary.
Mercury not only rules all kinds of communication, but it also represents coordination. Thought processes, ideas, and sensory information from both conscious and unconscious sources all need to be coordinated and understood. Mercury analyzes, sorts, groups, and makes sense of things. How do we handle nervous energy? How do we express and convey our thoughts? How do we approach others and information in order to learn and exchange ideas?
This upcoming retrograde period occurs in Cancer, a cardinal water sign known for its gentle, conservative, emotional, and nurturing qualities. However, these traits may backfire under Mercury retrograde, causing more than a little defensiveness and impulsivity. As emotions are a form of communication, you can be sure that most emotional interaction may end up falling apart before you want it to, causing hurt feelings and may even lead to an argument in which both sides lash out in order to cause harm to anyone who disagrees with them.
BORN UNDER MERCURY RETROGRADE?
It’s no secret that Mercury retrograde can make all forms of communication go sideways. Thankfully, it only happens four times a year for three weeks at a time… but its effects can be a little more long-lasting if you were born during Mercury retrograde. However, it’s not all bad — it turns out, lots of very successful people have been born during Mercury retrograde. While it can make parts of your life more confusing, being born with Mercury retrograde in your natal chart can actually be a powerful gift, even if it doesn’t seem that way at first glance.
Depending on how Mercury is aspected in your natal chart, you may experience Mercury Rx in a different way. For some, being born during Mercury retrograde means that you experience a boost of energy and intelligence whenever Mercury enters retrograde. You may feel more creative and have a deeper understanding of yourself than others even now. It can manifest in various different ways.
There are those who thrive under Mercury retrograde. However, they may get tripped up frequently during the fore- and post-shadow retrograde periods, when Mercury has stationed direct. Yet still has an impact on one’s personal energy.
I have one client who always knows when Mercury is about to go in reverse. He says that 2-3 weeks prior, he gets exceptionally clumsy. He drops thing constantly, and trips over things, or blurts something inappropriate out in public. He states that the moment he drops something, he hurries to check and see if Mercury is in its pre-shadow period. He claims 100% accuracy in determining this.
While everyone experiences these periods based on their natal charts, there are many other mitigating factors that an astrologer may be able to point out for you.
In the end, we experience increased levels of frustration and disappointment. Even the best-laid plans are susceptible to Mercury retrograde’s fickle nature. The effects are temporary.
