SMALL KINDNESSES

I’ve been thinking about the way, when you walk
down a crowded aisle, people pull in their legs
to let you by. Or how strangers still say “bless you”
when someone sneezes, a leftover
from the Bubonic plague. “Don’t die,” we are saying.
And sometimes, when you spill lemons
from your grocery bag, someone else will help you
pick them up. Mostly, we don’t want to harm each other.
We want to be handed our cup of coffee hot,
and to say thank you to the person handing it. To smile
at them and for them to smile back. For the waitress
to call us honey when she sets down the bowl of clam chowder,
and for the driver in the red pick-up truck to let us pass.
We have so little of each other, now. So far
from tribe and fire. Only these brief moments of exchange.
What if they are the true dwelling of the holy, these
fleeting temples we make together when we say, “Here,
have my seat,” “Go ahead—you first,” “I like your hat.”

Yesterday’s energy seeing Saturn go direct brings a bit of mental fog to our lives today. It’s easier now to get stuck on some thought or idea or feel like we’re in a rut that we can’t break free of. The day is a bit more demanding and we may not be easily able to move forward as we’d like. A demand for specificity and Truth are highlighted and may cause impatience and irritability. The less attached we are to our own set of “facts,” the more we’re able to recognize the discrepancies and keep things sorted out until we can better address them. Today is a “keep it together” day and allow for the energy to shift into more amenable areas.

The northern hemisphere sees the arrival of the autumn equinox beginning on Saturday and completing its transit on Monday. This equinox is the moment in time when the Sun is directly over the equator while crossing from north to south. Summer ends, and autumn begins. It also heralds in the sign of Libra.

Energetically, it will affect three signs the most: Libra, Scorpio, and Sagittarius. Over the next few months the plants begin to die. The leaves are on the ground, and the trees are bare. In Scorpio, ideas of life and death are most pronounced as the year’s life is given up and new life is concentrated into seeds for the next year. Sagittarius wraps up fall and moves us into winter. With the arrival of Sagittarius, the life energy is dispersed, and autumn gradually changes to winter. Some days are like autumn, other days the ground is covered by snow. These three signs work together to create a season, and they’ll be most affected by the 2019 fall equinox.
